Fiestas de la Beata, Santa Margalida

One of the most popular and deep-rooted celebrations in Mallorca.

Santa Catalina Thomàs, popularly known as the “Beata” or “Beateta”, was beatified in 1792, at which time various municipalities in Mallorca began to celebrate the Fiestas de la Beata in her honour.

In Santa Margalida, the procession of the Beata, which is celebrated on the first Sunday in September, begins in the morning with the demons going through the streets of the town to wake up the neighbours with the sound of the bells they wear on their clothes. At nightfall the Procession begins, presided over by the Beata, which goes through the streets accompanied by peasants, bands of music and floats that represent different passages from the life of the saint. But what will undoubtedly surprise you the most is seeing the demons trying to snatch the vases that the peasants carry to break them against the ground, at the feet of the Beata, while they dance around her. This unique procession ends with the final crack of the vases that the demons break in the Church Square.
