Fiestas de Llucmajor

The Llucmajor festivities have been held since 1546, after Charles V granted permission and Llucmajor won two lawsuits in Inca and Sineu.
In 1543, Emperor Charles V granted Llucmajor the royal privilege of being able to hold Fairs from 29 September (Sant Miquel) to the Sunday before 18 October (Sant Lluc).
On 16 July 1542, the Town Council, then chaired by Antoni Puigserver, agreed to ask the king to allow a weekly market and perpetual fairs to be held, like those already held in Sineu and Inca. Charles V’s permission to hold markets and fairs on St. Michael’s Day in San Lucas became a reality on 1 May 1543.
Thus came the royal privilege that would change the commercial activity of the town and its surroundings. But following the privilege of organising fairs granted to Llucmajor in 1543, Inca and Sineu brought a lawsuit, which Llucmajor won three years later. And it was not until 1546 that the first fair took place.
The festivities begin on Sant Miquel day with the opening speech, and during the Fair days there are exhibitions, competitions, etc. The most important day is the Última Fira, the Sunday before Sant Lluc.
The festivities have changed over time and have gone from presenting an eminently agricultural aspect to a more industrial, artisanal and commercial one. However, there are still things that endure over the years.
