Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians), Valldemossa

The Moors and Christians festivities are a vibrant historical re-enactment that takes Valldemossa back to the 16th century, when the town was attacked by Turkish pirates. On 1st October 1552, a group of 400 Saracens landed on the coast of sa Marina with the intention of sacking the town. Led by Pere el Valencià, a local traitor, the Moors attempted to take over the town, but were repelled thanks to the courage of Captain Ramon Gual Desmur and his 36 Valldemossins soldiers. This event is commemorated every year with a spectacular battle between Moors and Christians, which takes place along the cobbled streets of Valldemossa, with music, parades and dramatic scenes that captivate residents and visitors alike. The highlight of the festival takes place in the Plaza de la Cartuja, where the two factions clash in a symbolic combat that recreates the Christian victory. This festivity, initiated in 2014 by a group of friends, has become a local tradition that reflects the historical pride and festive spirit of the town, with a large turnout and a joyful atmosphere. The events usually conclude with a large popular toast in the Plaça Bartomeu Estaràs, where the community gathers to celebrate the brotherhood and the memory of this heroic era.
